Aspiring sculptors who???d like to Chisel a bit on the high cost of stone, may well envy Harvey Fite, former actor turned sculptor, who got himself a quarry for a modest price in the Catskill Mountains and at the same time a natural setting of mountains, three and sky in which to display his artistry in stone. He paid $376.25 for the location back in 1938. Fite???s quarry, in the shadow of Overlook Mountain near Woodstock, N.Y., has a history. It once supplied paving stones for the sidewalks of New York. He had to clear the site when he took over, and he did most of the work himself, with some assistance from neighbors, who also helped build his house; constructed with timbers from old barns and farmhouses. Fite, who makes his living at teaching sculptor at Bard College, Anandale-on-Hudson, N.Y., was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of a carpenter, 44 years ago. He was graduated from Houston (Texas) Law School in 1926 where his family had moved when he was five, but he foreswore the law to pursue the liberal arts. He became an actor, attaching himself to the Jitney Players, a repertory group from Yale University, which was under the direction of Monty Woolley. He amused himself between plays by carving on discarded fabric spools, turned seriously to sculpture during the depression when the acting periods became shorter and the carving periods became longer.??? His work will be on exhibit in art galleries in Boston, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee and St. Paul during Artists Equity-Week (March 22 to April 6) when the artists of the nation are having their first multiple art showing. He???s walking through the snow in his quarry to go to work on an unfinished statue in Woodstock, New York on Feb. 26, 1948. That???s his combined house and studio in the background. He chisels sculpture out of huge blocks of stone which he quarries himself and lifts into place with a chain-and-tackle derrick. He has created attractive pedestals for his art on a series of terraces he has constructed about the quarry. (AP Photo/Wands)
