AP Historical Hard Drive 2009
Only a shattered shell remains of the once beautiful city of Warsaw, Capitol of Poland, Oct. 1, 1945. Hardly a building escaped damage during the severe enemy Bombardments. Marszalkowska Street, Warsaw's Piccadilly, has been reduced to a mass of rubble and debris - even the tomb of the Unknown Soldier was dynamited by the enemy. It is estimated that hundreds of bodies still lie beneath the stones of this gallant city, which was fired by the Germans during their great retreat. Photo shows: A view of the Devastated city of Warsaw- A Panorama of Grim destruction. In the foreground is seen a pile of rubble swept from the streets by the few citizens who remain in the ghost city. (AP Photo)
