AP Historical Hard Drive 2009
Young apprentice stonemasons work in the best medieval tradition in 20th century Manhattan, New York City, painstakingly chiseling Indiana limestone blocks, 1980. And the completion of the world?s largest Gothic structure is under way. The stones are to be used to build to build the last two towers of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, a $2 million program. It may be two or three years before the first stones are laid - as in medieval times, each stone is to be cut by hand on site, and 10,000 will be needed for each tower. (AP Photo/Dennis Whitehead)
