As the government of the new state of Slovakia took form in Bratislava under Dr. Joseph Tiso, the new Slovak premier, Hlinka guards (Slovak storm troopers) kept order, March 14, 1939. A detachment of the Hlinka guards are shown above patrolling the streets. It was understood that Dr. Tiso promised Hitler that the Slovak storm troops would take the place of an ordinary army.
