AP Historical Hard Drive 2008
Signs of tension continue in Colombo, August 12, 1958, capital of Ceylon, as an aftermath of riots which swept over the Indian Ocean Island in May and June. The violence came with clashes between the Singhalese and the Tamils, ethnic group on the island, over a bill making Singhalese the only official language. Hundreds of houses and other buildings were burned, and more than 150 persons were killed. A high fence now cordons off a block of buildings in which ground floor Tamil shops were burned out in Colombo?s worst incident of arson during the riots. (AP Photo)
