AP Historical Hard Drive 2008
When motorcycle police attempted to break up a crowd of more than 1,500 hosiery workers who had gathered to protest sale of machinery of a Philadelphia hosiery factory at auction, the crowd turned the tables by grabbing the police machines and attempting to hold them back, March 3, 1938. Approximately 100 police were on hand as the auctioneer's hammer dropped at the factory of Brownhill & Kramer, Inc., which was closed after a strike began there last August. (AP Photo)
