This tragic picture shows the ill-fated at Charlestown navy yard, Boston, back in 1928 after she had been raised from 101 feet of water off Provincetown, Mass. She had gone down three months earlier (in 1927) and when this photo was made the bodies of victims still were inside and a U.S. fla was flying at half mast. The sinking of this submarine caused the development of the giant diving bell which was so successfully used in rescuing 33 crewmen of the submarine, squalus, which sank off Portsmouth, N.H., 23. On May 26, 1939 the navy was to raise the squalus, support her with pontoons, and bring her into some near by navy yard. (AP Photo)
