On a tour of inspection of the Army and Navy's newest fighting planes, Oct. 29, 1938, President Franklin Roosevelt paused beside this giant four -engined naval flying boat which arrived at Anacostia Naval Air Base, near Washington on Oct. 28, 1938 after a non-stop flight from San Diego, Calif. The giant plane can carry eight 1,000 pound bombs and cruises at around 225 miles per hour. Sitting with president, and pointing to the plane is Assistant Secretary of Navy Charles Edison.
