AP Historical Hard Drive 2002
A part of the elevating machinery for the 2,100-ton lift span of New York's Triborough Bridge is shown on May 5, 1936. The lift span, 310 feet long, will be hoisted 80 feet to permit passage of ship traffic in the East River. The enormous span will be connected by 96 steel wire cables to concrete counterweights in the towers, so that the actual unbalanced load to be lifted will only be 65 tons. (AP Photo)
