AP Historical Hard Drive 1997
This photo shows Charles E. Duryea, 69-year-old Philadelphia inventor who, 40 years ago, engineered America's first gasoline automobile, combining in it all the essentials of the modern car. Here he experiments on a new type of motor, on August 11, 1931, which he predicts will revolutionize the whole automobile industry. He is now developing a self-starting engine which will omit the need for the present electric starters. (AP Photo)
