AP Historical Hard Drive 1995
Work goes on around the clock on the construction site of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, Aug. 26, 1995, Sixty-four years after Josef Stalin had it blown up, the cathedral is being built again with strong backing from Moscow's mayor, help from banks and businesses, and the blessing of President Boris Yeltsin. Stalin's plans to build a grandiouse Palace of Soviets, the biggest building in the world, finally turned the site into a public swimming pool. Before its destruction by the communist regime, it was the largest cathedral in Russia. Begun in 1837 to commemorate the 1812 victory over Napoleon, it took four decades to build.(AP Photo/Sergei Karpukhin)
