Damage is seen after a dike broke along a waterway, flooding a nearby residental neighborhood in Wilnis, Netherlands, Aug. 26, 2003. Around 1,500 people were voluntarily evacuated from the area. Firefighters built an emergency dike to protect the town from further flooding. Although the chance of a major flood is remote, all Dutch experts agree, Thursday Sept. 1 , 2005, it could happen again. The impact of such a disaster in the heart of the country, the area containing Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, and a population would be unthinkable. Amsterdam is more than 2.5 meters (more than 8 feet) under sea level at low tide.
