A temporary flood barrier made out of aluminum, protects houses in the village of Itteren, next to Maas river near Maastricht, southern Netherlands, Jan. 26, 2003. At the start of January the town prepared for evacuation, due to rising waters. Although the chance of a major flood is remote, all Dutch experts agree, Thursday Sept. 1 , 2005, it could happen again. The impact of such a disaster in the heart of the country, the area containing Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, and a population would be unthinkable. Amsterdam is more than 2.5 meters (more than 8 feet) under sea level at low tide. In a flood, people might survive by climbing on the roofs, but in 1953, as happened in New Orleans this week, many collapsed. (AP Photo/ Peter Dejong)
