People applaud 17 November 1989 in Warsaw as the 15m (49ft) statue of Felix Dzerzhinsky, the founder of Cheka, the first Soviet's secret service, is taken down. The statue had stood in a square named after Dzerzhinsky in downtown Warsaw since 1945. This was the latest of several statues of former communist leaders to be removed here since a non-communist government came to power in September 1989.
