As Beijing prepares to celebrate on October 1, 2009 the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, the date October 1949 also opened a fresh chapter in the history of the "other China" -- Taiwan. The Communist victory in China was such a humiliating defeat for Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek that he was compelled to reconsider what had gone wrong in order to ensure the survival of his new regime.
