TO GO WITH China-politics-60years-Taiwan,FOCUS by Peter Harmsen This handout photo from Taiwan's Kuomintang (KMT) party shows Taiwan president Chiang Kai-shek (R) with US General Douglas MacArthur (L) during the latter's visit to Taiwan on August 1, 1950. As Beijing prepares to celebrate on October 1, 2009 the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, the date October 1949 also opened a fresh chapter in the history of the "other China" -- Taiwan. The Communist victory in China was such a humiliating defeat for Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek that he was compelled to reconsider what had gone wrong in order to ensure the survival of his new regime.
