Frost Fair Mug. A souvenir of the spectacular fair held on the frozen River Thames in the severe winter of 1683-84. Possibly engraved while-you-wait at one of the toy shops on Temple Street built across the ice. London tradesmen erected booths such as coffee houses, inns and shops on the ice. Bear-baiting, football and ox-roasting entertained the crowds. The ice melted on 8 February and everything vanished beneath the water. Engraved with: Bought on ye Thames [ice Janu: ye 17 1683/4]. Glass. Southwark, London, England, 1684.
