The Panama Pacific International Exposition was held by the city of San Francisco to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal. This world fair was also a celebration of the city's recovery from the earthquake and fire of 1906. The Arch of the Nations of the East, seen here under construction, was surmounted by horsemen, camels and an elephant.
