The Tidepool Sculpin (Oligocottus maculosus) is an intertidal species, found in sheltered areas and common in tide pools. In areas with rough surf, it occurs in higher, more sheltered places. It is very tolerant of extreme changes in temperature, from small pools in direct sun to the cool ocean temperatures of high tide. This sculpin is able to use its sense of smell to find its way back to its home tidepool. It breathes air when out of the water.
