Cushing's Syndrome: typical reddening of face. Cushing's Syndrome is a condition resulting from excess corticosteriod hormones in the body. It may be caused by overstimulation of the adrenal glands due to excessive amounts of the hormone ACTH, secreted by a tumor of the pituitary gland (Cushing's disease) or by a malignant tumor elsewhere. Another cause may be a tumor of the adrenal glands resulting in excessive activity & prolonged treatment with corticosteriod drugs. Symptoms included obesity, reddening of the face & neck, growth of body & facial hair, raised blood pressure & mineral loss from bones (osteoporosis).
