This handout photograph released by The European Southern Observatory (ESO) on February 14, 2020, shows the red supergiant star Betelgeuse, in the constellation of Orion, which has been undergoing unprecedented dimming, taken with the SPHERE instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope in December 2019. - Astronomers have succeeded in capturing images of the giant star Betelgeuse, showing that one of the brightest stars in the Milky Way has lost much of its brightness in recent months, according to a European Southern Observatory (ESO) press release issued on February 14, 2020. The images, taken through ESO's Very Large Telescope, a set of four large telescopes, show the surface of this "red supergiant" in the constellation of Orion, showing its fading, as well as an apparent change in its shape.
