Lalibela is a monastic city of northern Ethiopia, the second holy city of the country, after Aksum; Is an important center of pilgrimage. Its population belongs almost entirely to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. It is located in the state of Amhara, at 2,500 meters above sea level. According to the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia, its population in 2005 was 14,668, 7,049 men and 7,619 women. Lalibela, formerly called Roha, was the capital of the Zague dynasty.
