The first group of Syrian migrants wait to embark the Eleftherios Venizelos liner, which will serve as registration and accommodation center at the island of Kos early on August 16, 2015. Authorities on the island of Kos have been so overwhelmed with a surge in migrants that the government on August 14 sent a ferry to serve as a temporary centre to issue travel documents to Syrian refugees -- among some 7,000 migrants stranded on the island of about 30,000 people. Scores of exhausted migrants, many of whom arrived on inflatable boats early on August 15, were turned away from the ferry that was due to start registering new arrivals. AFP PHOTO/LOUISA GOULIAMAKI
