Hand-coloured albumen photograph by Felice Beato. One of the first war photographers, Venetian-born Beato worked with James Robertson in the Middle East and the Crimea, photographing the aftermath of the Indian Mutiny and the Chinese Opium Wars. In Japan from 1862, he worked with the artist Charles Wirgman.
