FINCH PINCHER! A greenfinch and a goldfinch get into a squabble over the seed in a birdfeeder, showcasing the natural pecking order of the two bird species. The pair were pictured in a garden in Hailsham, East Sussex.
Ed Brown said, “I have a bird table outside my conservatory with a couple of feeders hanging off it so we have plenty of birdlife visiting our garden. The Greenfinches and Goldfinches are quite common in the garden but there is definitely a pecking order.
“The Goldfinches will happily sit feeding but as soon as a Greenfinch turns up there will be a quick argument and the Greenfinch will often take its spot on the feeder.”

*** Local Caption *** The pictures were taken yesterday 18/11/24 I just noticed I had the wrong date on the camera hence the metadata was wrong. Yes they were taken in my garden in Hailsham. I had just got myself a new camera in an early black friday sale, hence inputting the wrong date in a rush to play! I have a bird table outside my conservatory with a couple of feeders hanging off it so we have plenty of birdlife, the conservatory makes a great hide & using the electronic shutter on the camera makes it silent so as not to disturb the birds. Added bonus is you can sit in comfort & drink coffee while waiting :-) The Greenfinches and Goldfinches are quite common in the garden but there is definitely a pecking order, the Goldfinches will happily sit feeding but once a Greenfinch turns up there will be a quick argument and the Greenfinch will take its spot. You can see the size difference so it's fairly easy for the Greenfinch to bully the Goldfinches. It was quite cold yesterday morning so I think they were more likely to fight over what food was available. This didn't last long though as soon after a Sparrowhawk flew overhead and scared everything off! If you could mention how important it is in the winter to help out the birds by providing food & fresh water that would be great.
