Experiments to perfect a system whereby helicopters are employed to pick up and deliver mail to an exact timetable at isolated points across the country were conducted at the Westland Aircraft Company's works at Yeovil , Somerset. The scheme is a collaboaration between British European Airways and the GPO , and Westland-Sikorsky and Irvin-Bell helicopters are the machines employed . The air mail experimental unit is controlled by Wing Commander R A C Brie . Images show the craziest inventions around the world from the 1900’s with enthusiastic people happy to take part in the trials.
According to mediadrumworld.com some of the most impressive contraptions that were on offer included the world's first passenger carrying submarine from 13 July 1964 named, ‘The craft’, which could carry 42 passengers at a depth of 3000 ft. It was scheduled to start passenger carrying runs at the exhibition from 16 July 1964.
