A photographer has captured on camera a pride of lions enjoying their favourite drinking spot on a night out.
A pair of lionesses and two lions looked like they were on a double date as they arrived at the waterhole around midnight in the Zimanga Private Game Reserve, South Africa.
British wildlife photographer Gary Jones took these amazing shots from a hide just feet away from the four impressive big cats on November 26.
The unique angle of Garyâs photos highlights every mark and scratch on the fur of the apex predators as they lapped up the water with their huge tongues.
Gary, who runs photography tours around the world, said being so close to the lions in the dead of night meant you could hear everything, from the low rumbles of their vocalisations to their breathing and the noise of them drinking.
He said: âSo to see a lioness appear out the dark just before midnight was awesome, but she was then followed out of the dark by another female and a male, and young male, so four in total.
âIt really was hold your breath time, they were literally drinking a few metres away, the images being taken only with a 24-70mm lens.
âWhen you are right down at water level looking upon at the four of them that close, you get a real sense of their size, stature, presence and power, you could hear everything.
âWithout doubt it was the highlight of my couple of weeks at the reserve, the feeling to be so close to these awesome animals is very difficult to describe.â
