Kia turns 90mph modest, old hatchback into electric
Kia has turned one of their modest, old hatchbacks into an electric.
The 1996 Pride 1.3 LX could only do 90mph and had a sluggish 0-60mph of just 11.8 seconds.
But the South Korean car manufacturer has made an EV version to mark its 80th anniversary.
It has teamed up with converter firm Electrogenic to create the modern version.
The five-door Pride has been fitted with a 20kWh battery, feeding an electric motor putting out up to 107 bhp.
The white run-a-round can do up to 120 miles off a single charge in eco mode.
But it will also have a sport mode which will reduce this, as reported on Luxury Auto News.
A spokesperson for Electrogenic - based in Kidlington, Oxfordshire - said: “The upcycled Pride EV introduces a fully electric powertrain – with high power, instantaneous torque and zero tailpipe emissions – to a car that was never created with any of these characteristics in mind.
“It swaps almost all of its original internal combustion components for a fully electric powertrain – with only its original five-speed manual transmission and drive shafts retained to ensure maximum driver engagement.
“The conversion from petrol to electric power was carried out by hand in the UK.
“The Pride EV is fully road-legal and, somewhere between a curio and a plaything, intended to be as engaging to drive as an early hot hatch.
“Unashamed and unabashed, the car retains its original 1980s-derived design.
“However, it adopts certain elements that link it to the modern Kia of 2024.”
Electrogenic has previously turned the DeLorean DMC-12 and the Rolls-Royce 1929 Phantom II electric.
