Story from Jam Press (Strange Shark) Pictured: A previous strange Shark found on the beach found by Alex Aitkenhead. Strange shark with tail longer than body found on beach A strange shark with a tail longer than its body has washed up dead on a popular beach. Wildlife photographer Alex Aitkenhead came across the shark while out jogging one evening. Along with his partner Juanita Aitkenhead, they took several photographs of the dead animal and identified it as a juvenile common thresher shark. Alex told Jam Press: “I found the shark on my regular run from Sunset Beach to the Milnerton Lighthouse just before sunset.” Despite recognising it as a common thresher, he said he had “never seen one before”. Alex added: “The shark was in a very good state, with no damage or any sign of injuries or predation. “The only noticeable point was that the eyes were missing, but this is common.” Alex believes the shark remained in the water for a couple days after its death, allowing smaller fish to feast on its soft eyes. He said it is “very rare” for common threshers to wash ashore in Cape Town, South Africa, adding that the last occurrence happened several years ago. Alex said: “I'm not sure why this juvenile washed up on our shores.” Reaching around 20 feet in length, common threshers are known for their streamlined body and large scythe-like tail fins. The tail’s upper lobe accounts for about half of its total body length. They are the largest of three species in the Alopiidae family, all of which are listed as ‘vulnerable’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Common threshers are intentionally targeted by hunters for their expensive meat, but are also accidentally caught by fishing crews. ENDS
