HOPPING MAD!! This owl looks like it is hoping towards camera with purpose. The Burrowing Owl was spotted in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, even stopping for a quick wink towards the photographer. Amature photographer Elizabeth Shen said, "Burrowing owls are considered rare in the San Francisco Bay Area, primarily due to habitat loss from urban development. Historically, the region’s open grasslands and coastal prairies provided suitable nesting grounds, but much of this habitat has been converted to residential, industrial, and agricultural land. Though populations persist in parts of the East Bay and South Bay, their numbers have significantly declined. Conservation programs have been implemented to protect these remaining populations, including habitat restoration projects and artificial burrow installations to encourage breeding." "I spotted this owl through my binoculars when hiking in the area. It was sitting alone by its burrow far away on the hill. I tried to get close to it slowly but maintained a respectful distance. Some animals tolerate humans, while others are skittish. Thankfully, it seemed to tolerate my presence. I stayed where I took these shots most of the time. It kept a close eye on me and even “winked” at the camera." "When I tried to get closer, it flew away but stayed nearby - a clear message that I was getting too close. So…. I left. That was my only time photographing this owl. Burrowing owls are fascinating creatures known for their unique behaviour and habitat. Unlike most owls, which nest in trees, burrowing owls make their homes in burrows, often using abandoned burrows dug by other animals like ground squirrels."
