VIDEO: ‘I'm a sleep expert – this is why you SHOULDN'T have separate beds'
With sleep divorces rising in popularity, one expert is warning against the practice.
The caution comes after new research by mattress company Simba reports 60% of young Brits say better sleep improves their “connection” their other half.
As the CEO of The Sleep Charity, Lisa Artis knows all about how a decent kip can impact our lives.
And while she understands that many couples are turning to having separate beds or bedrooms to preserve their relationship, she says this could actually be having the opposite effect.
She reveals several ways sleeping next to your partner can aid your body and mind – from a boost to the immune system to having less fights.
“Sharing a bed enhances emotional bonding and intimacy,” she told NeedToKnow.
“Physical closeness releases oxytocin – the ‘love hormone' – which promotes feelings of affection and trust.
“Studies suggest that couples who sleep together report higher levels of relationship satisfaction and emotional intimacy.”
Sleeping next to your partner isn’t just about closeness.
According to Lisa, who has partnered with Simba, your sleep quality could be improved too.
She said: Contrary to the belief that sleeping separately improves sleep quality, research shows that co-sleeping can actually enhance sleep.
“Couples often synchronise their sleep patterns, leading to more restful and deeper sleep.
“Additionally, the sense of security and comfort from a partner's presence can reduce stress and anxiety, which are common disruptors of sleep.”
You might resolve fights better too and boost your immune system.
Lisa added: “Couples who sleep together tend to resolve conflicts more effectively.
“Physical proximity provides opportunities for late-night conversations and resolutions, reducing the likelihood of going to bed angry.
