A slight smile forms on the almost serene face of this four-month-old fox, clearly enjoying the smell of flowers and a comfortable bed of flora. The Ezo red fox is a subspecies of red fox widely distributed in Hokkaido, Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands and the surrounding islands of Japan. Ezo is a Japanese word meaning "foreigner" and refers to the historical lands of the Ainu people to the north of Honshu, which the Japanese named Ezo-chi. Their habitat ranges widely from grassland to alpine belts in Hokkaido.
