ONE... TWO... FREE! A kingfisher makes off with two catches while a third darts back into the water. This incredible feat of fishing was witnessed at the Alde Estuary, Suffolk.
Phil Orris said, “This very busy kingfisher was fishing by the bank of the Alde estuary to feed his third brood of the year. It was incredible to be able to sit and watch him carry out his duties.”
“Kingfishers are just beautiful, and watching them fish is very special. So to be able to freeze frame them, capturing their elegance and superb hunting skills was a great feeling. Kingfishers, like all birds are very devout parents and work tirelessly to keep their young fed. It made me tired just watching the guy.”

2. Can you describe what you saw?
This very busy kingfisher was fishing by the bank of the Alde estuary to feed his 3rd brood of the year. It was incredible to be able to sit and watch him carry out his duties.
3. How did you capture this shot? Were you waiting for a while and did they mind your presence?
In a hide a short distance from his favourite fishing spot, as he was feeding his youngsters he was very active for a few hours. Using the hide to shield my presence and a mirrorless camera with a silent shutter he was not bothered by me at all. The beautiful bright sun enabled me to use shutter speeds of 1/8000 of a second to freeze the moment he caught his fish.
4. Have you ever seen a kingfisher catch two in one?! Did you notice it at the time or only once you reviewed the images?
Never! It was definitely a first. It was so fast that I only realised when looking back at the shots!
5. What is your favourite thing about the shots?
Kingfishers are just beautiful, and watching them fish is very special. So to be able to freeze frame them, capturing their elegance and superb hunting skills was a great feeling.
6. Any other info we may like to know?
Kingfishers, like all birds are very devout parents and work tirelessly to keep their young fed. It made me tired just watching the guy. We know this is the male due to its solid black lower beak.
