The world’s top microscopic artist Dr. Willard Wigan MBE has once again showcased his unparalleled talent by creating a tribute to the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games. This extraordinary microscopic masterpiece features the Paris 2024 Mascot, the Olympic Phryge, meticulously crafted by hand and standing within the eye of a needle. Willard's tribute sculpture is the world’s smallest microscopic mascot in Olympic history, featuring microscopic details that include the Olympic rings, the French flag, and a gold medal the size of a human blood cell. Crafted with 24-karat gold, the logo on the mascot's chest adds a touch of luxury to this minuscule masterpiece. The sculpture, aptly named "Micro Mascot Phryge in the Eye of a Needle 2024," reflects Willard's admiration for the Olympic Games and their celebration of diversity, unity, and athletic excellence. Inspired by the historical and symbolic significance of the Phrygian cap, Willard's creation honours the athletes and countries participating in the 2024 Olympics. "I love the Olympic Games. The diversity and the bringing together of cultures and athletes from all over the world resonate with my belief that we all have our small part to play and should be celebrated," says Dr. Willard Wigan MBE. "This sculpture is a tribute to the spirit of the Olympics and the unity it fosters." Dr. Wigan MBE's Olympic Phryge is a small but powerful representation of Paris 2024’s vision that sport can change lives, embodying the spirit of freedom and revolution through sport. Adorned in the tricolour of the French flag and emblazoned with the golden Paris 2024 logo, the Phrygian cap has long been a symbol of liberty in French history. The Phryge mascots symbolise the unifying power of the Olympics, captured by their motto: “Alone we go faster, but together we go further.” Dr. Wigan’s dedication to his art is evident in every aspect of this sculpture. He works tirelessly, often between heartbeats, using a small acupuncture needle with an eyelash as a paintbrush to achieve the intricate details. Describing his method, he explains: “When you’re working at the molecular level it’s unforgiving. Because it’s microscopic, You get all these external forces like static electricity jumping all over the place. You have to be very still and hold your breath, and work between heartbeats.” Micro Mascot Phryge in the Eye of a Needle 2024 is the latest sporting-themed sculpture by Wigan, as he has previously honoured Tyson Fury, Cristiano Ronaldo, and British Olympic heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson.
