A gannet chick looks straight up into the mouth of its mother as it looks to feed from her. The northern gannets were sat on rocks at Helgoland, a group of small islands in the North Sea and part of the German state. Larissa Rand, 48, who made the trip from Udenhout, Netherlands said, "I spent a few days there but didn’t see much feeding moments. On the last day I was able to capture this. There were some lines to protect the breeding area of these birds. To avoid a line in the picture I had to lay on the ground to capture the shot from a low angle." "I love the interaction between mother and chick. It looks was so peaceful even though sometimes it looked like the mother was going to eat the chick, because the baby went all in the way into her mouth to get the food." Please byline: Larissa Rand/Solent News © Larissa Rand/Solent News & Photo Agency UK +44 (0) 2380 458800 *** Local Caption *** 1. When and where were the photos taken? The end of June 2022 at Helgoland 2. Did you have to wait a long time to take the shots? I spent a few days there but didn’t see much feeding moments. At the last day I was able to capture this. 3. How did you capture this shot and were there any difficulties in getting the shots? There were some lines to protect the breeding area of these birds. To avoid a line in the picture I had to capture the shot from a low angle (laying on the ground ;)) On the rocks it was very crowded with the Northern gannets who were all breading over there. It was difficult to isolate the birds, that’s why I used a 500mm to zoom in on this moment. 4. What is your favourite thing(s) about these shots? I love the interaction between mother and child. It looks peaceful and the external differences between an adult and baby are very big.Sometimes it looked like the mother was going to eat the baby, because the baby went all in the mouth of the mother to get the food. 5. Is there any further information we should know that could help us with the captions? A lot of northern gannets have died last year because of bird flu. This year there were less birds. Hopefully these ones survived. 6. What is your preferred full name, age, occupation and where are you from? Larissa Rand, 48 years, manager of education and living in Udenhout, the Netherlands.
