A picture taken on April 25, 2024, shows the Serbian flag colours and graffiti painted on house close to a steel mill owned by Chinese company HBIS in the village of Radinac, near the eastern Serbian city of Smederevo. The cyrillic writing reads, "This is not China, this is Serbia. Install (chimney) filters!". In the eight years since Chinese company HBIS bought a steel mill near the eastern Serbian city of Smederevo, residents say they have been plagued by heavy air pollution and thick red dust. Radinac, a village next to Smederevo, has become known as "red village", because everything is permanently coated in a layer of red dust. In the three villages near the mill, residents say that they have experienced throat irritation, unpleasant smells and continual soot coating their houses, clothes and bodies.
