Aqeel Othman, a 13-year-old displaced Syrian boy, carves a block of stone at the quarry that employs him on the outskirts of the town of al-Dana in the rebel-held northwestern Idlib province on March 14, 2024. Aqeel fled the town of Ainjara in the rebel-held part of Aleppo province in 2020. He had reached the fifth garde in 2021 when he interrupted his schooling and began to work in a sawmill to carve and manufacture stone on the outskirts of the city of Dana in the northern part of the Idlib province.
On March 15, 2024, Syria will mark 13 years since the government's brutal suppression of the 2011 uprising that triggered a civil war which has killed more than half a million people, drawn in foreign armies and jihadists, and divided the country. (Photo by Aaref WATAD / AFP)
