THE HIGHS AND THE B-LOWS...... These giraffes battled with some high and very low blows. They were seen trying to lift the legs of their opponents to be the dominant male and give themself time to drink at the Tswalu Private Nature Reserve in the Green Kalahari area of South Africa. Chemical engineer John Mullineux, 40, from Secunda, South Africa, said "Giraffes have a low population density in the area owing to the low amount of food and water for them. Three herds of giraffes came to drink at the same time, a very rare occurrence. Our guide had never seen so many giraffes together at the reserve." "After drinking from a small dam, two of the herds moved off in the same direction. There was some posturing and bumping going on before the fight escalated. Giraffe bulls will fight over the same thing other animals do, to show who's more dominant and who should be top of the mating list. There was no instigating event for this fight, rather it was rival males showing their skills and strength." "One had its leg lifted high off the ground and at one point only had two legs touching the ground. Therefore, the victor was crowned and allowed to browse and take his time while the other male made his way off into the bush." "Males often fight by hitting opponents with their horns after using their long necks together head speed, however, this is the first time that I have seen a giraffe aggressively picking up another giraffe."
