WORDS BYLINE: Sarah Ingram While many of us are getting our overpriced and overcrowded trains to work, Harry Jaggard will be riding on top of an iron ore train through the Sahara Desert. And while most can look forward to a week or two away a year in the sun, Harry spends much of his spare time on a Bali beach. Harry, from Stratford-Upon-Avon, found his ‘soul sucking’ desk job was bringing him down, so three years ago he handed in his notice, packed a rucksack and didn’t look back. Since then, he’s been to 51 countries in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, funding himself through his YouTube videos which cover his constant travel costs. He spends around a week in each new spot so he can engrain himself into the culture of the locals; wearing traditional clothes, learning their language and eating the same food. ‘My favourite spots have been Afghanistan, Nepal, Pakistan, Yemen and Colombia - basically Dangerousville, Unheardistan, and Why-on-earth-are-you-going-there-ia. But, I mostly found myself drinking tea with locals and dodging a few too-curious goats. ‘I love the backpacking lifestyle. I get to see the world and have learnt that 99% of people aren’t out to kidnap me or steal my phone. I have total freedom over my schedule. I wake up when I want (usually early), travel where I want and hang out with people who have similar interests to myself and I love the thrill of the unknown. I never know what I’m doing tomorrow’, he says. The quality of his accommodation has varied wildly; from at a luxurious hotel in Dubai with a water park, aquarium and the best buffet he’s ever seen to a £0.50 hotel in Pakistan that was a wooden bed in a dorm of 30 other men with no pillow, sheets or aircon. ‘Apart from that I've often stayed for free in family homes in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Philippines - these are the best experiences as you get to experience what life is truly like in these countries’, he explains. My top three experiences have been riding on top of an Iron Ore train for 22 hours through the Sahara Desert - which was extremely hard but well worth it, getting a tribal tattoo in South Sudan - they use a knife to cut a tattoo into your skin but I felt like I was one of them and having tea with the Taliban in Afghanistan. That whole trip was transformative and life changing. I realised that there is a lot of suffering in this world and it made me forever grateful to be born in a developed country,’ he says. ‘That said, I haven’t been in as many dangerous situations as you may expect. Luckily, I've never had anything stolen and have encountered some of the most incredibly hospitable people in the places normally deemed to be unsafe. ‘I did get knocked out in a local Nigerian bare knuckle boxing match - which was my own fault. I’ve had people call me a terrorist in Pakistan, and the whole trip to Somalia was pretty tense and unsettling, even though I had two armed security guards’, Harry, 26, explains. But Harry’s family back home worry about him and are keen to track him across the world. ‘Travelling without any kind of protection would be pretty stupid. So I use Outbacker insurance, which in addition to all the other stuff you get, gives you free access to a really great emergency contacts app - My SOS Family. You basically choose your network of family and friends who are all contacted at the same time, if you need help. It doesn’t have to be for dangerous situations either, it can also be used to automatically let them know you’ve changed location’ he explains. And he also goes home for a month a year to fill up on family time, roast dinners and ‘for a social recharge’. While the constant packing and unpacking does get tiresome, and moving accommodation every three days and managing frequent illness and sickness bugs can be tough, Harry says he will live this lifestyle until it stops being fun. ‘I can’t imagine coming home and working a 9-5. I love the UK, but I believe you should go where you are treated best by the country, and the UK does not do this for me and Bali, Indonesia, is half the price, has better weather and a big community of people on the same mission as me. If I lost everything tomorrow, I like to think I could still work hard enough to be my own boss. ‘I’ll keep moving it until I no longer enjoy it or get sick of airport security. It's not sustainable for the rest of my life but I love it right now and would like to visit every country in the world’, he adds. ***Note to editors.
