Rupi was embarrassed by the public shaming BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND SHOCKING FOOTAGE of a man being told he has to leave a UK shopping centre because his mobility scooter wasn't permitted has been shared by the appalled shopper.  The footage shows a security guard informing the user of a mobility scooter that that ‘thing’ is not allowed in the shopping centre while blocking his path. The incident occurred in The Bull Ring shopping centre, Birmingham, England, on the 16th April 2024 at 12:49pm.  Rupinder Bhurji (41) from Birmingham, England was taken aback when he was just out and about shopping when suddenly the female security guard publicly shamed him by stating he could not be in the centre because of his mobility scooter. Rupinder had the wherewithal to record the shocking exchange.  “The incident occurred on the 16/04/2024 at exactly 12:49pm whilst I was out shopping alone in the Bullring & Grand Central in Birmingham,” said Rupinder.  “I was stopped out of the blue by a female security guard close to the Omega and Michael Kors shop.  “I clearly remember what she said as it was so embarrassing, the guard stood in front of me and said “that thing can’t be in here, you know what i’m talking about” I replied by saying “it’s a mobility scooter, what do you mean” she replied “you know what I’m talking about”. “I told the lady again “I wasn’t leaving, it's a mobility scooter” then I heard the lady call a colleague via her radio, so I took out my mobile phone and started to record.  “On the video, you can clearly hear the guard saying, 'oh now he’s gonna film he’s getting aggressive.' “After I started to record the guard walked away and I was going to leave without complaining, but because I was approached by her a second time about 15-20 mins later where she asked me 'why did I record her' I decided to complain." Rupinder explained why he needs to use his mobility scooter in his normal life.“In 1990 when I was seven years old I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a rare form of cancer in my spine," he said.  “I survived and beat cancer with chemotherapy but it left me with a life long walking disability and epilepsy.  “I spent most of childhood in and out of hospital and years in a wheelchair then slowly moved to crutches.  “I then bought a mobility scooter to make me more independent. “It was complete discrimination against a person with a disability, definitely 100% abuse of power.  “The security guard could have spoken to me quietly out of the way in private and I wouldn’t have minded at all. “The incident was shocking and very embarrassing due to it being in a public and very busy building, people passing by were all looking at me like I was some sort of thief.  “I was in the Bullring on the 14/04/2024 two days before with my family and I had no problem at all." Since complaining to the shopping centre, Rupinder has received an apology by email. “Always make a complaint and take details, such as time and date of the incident, If you can make a video of the incident.” The Birmingham Bullring has been approached for a comment.
