Earlier this month, MANICA design studio revealed renderings for a new stadium in Kansas City. Dedicated to the Kansas City Chiefs, the design featured a state-of-the-art enclosed stadium, outdoor amphitheater, modern training facility parking for tailgating experiences, and mixed-use development which the Kansas City Royals could claim as their new headquarters. The stadium would be located in Wyandotte County, at I-435 and I-70, across from the Legends Outlets and Kansas Speedway. “The design offers Kansas City the potential for an incredible new home for the Chiefs – and a modern stadium that brings Kansas City new opportunities to host a Super Bowl, NCAA Final Fours Championships, and a wider variety of concerts and family shows than ever before,” architect David Manica said in a statement. “The design concept is inspired by the form and spirit of our historic Arrowhead Stadium, but it offers more diversity in the variety of experiences it will offers its fans… With this new stadium, the fans in Kansas City will enjoy a new level of comfort and amenity that the existing Arrowhead could never offer.” Both Arrowhead Stadium and the Kansas City Royals’ Kauffman Stadium sit isolated in Cunningham Ridge just outside Kansas City proper. David continued, “This site offers incredible access for everybody in the city. And, the total available area will provide an unbelievable tailgating experience that is supplemented by a fantastic mixed-use development.” MANICA’s design was presented at a state senate meeting where Kansas lawmakers pushed to approve a new STAR bond legislation, which would allow the development to generate sales tax. Local residents voted down a sales tax measure last month which would have funded a renovation to the existing Arrowhead Stadium. The bond would also enable the Kansas Department of Commerce to negotiate with the Chiefs and Royals to move over the state line from Missouri to Kansas. The Stadium Business reports that the MANICA design was commissioned by an unnamed real estate developer who wished to support the Chiefs’ and Royals’ move over the border. Chiefs chairman and chief executive Clark Hunt admitted it “may make more sense” to move home stadiums after the Arrowhead Stadium renovation plan was rejected. “We will approach it from a broader perspective going forward because time is short for us at this point and so we need to see what other options are out there for us,” Clark told ESPN. “When we started on this process three years ago, it felt like we had a very long time, a long runway with about nine and a half [years] left on our lease. We’re now down to six and a half and so I do feel very much of a sense of urgency.” If approved, the bond proposal also promises at least one billion dollars (800 million pounds) to fund venues containing more than 30,000 seats. The bond would be paid off over thirty years with tax collected from the region’s residents. MANICA has previously released designs for Raiders, Titans, and Bears stadiums.
