(NYT19) BETHESDA, Md. -- May 27, 2007 -- STROKES-4 -- Dr. Walter Koroshetz, deputy director of the National Institute on Neurological Disorders and Stroke of the NIH, in his office at NIH in Bethesda, Md., May 18, 2007. More than 700,000 Americans have strokes each year, and 150,000 die. Half the survivors end up with permanent disabilities N loss of vision, paralysis, difficulty speaking. But many strokes that could be successfully treated are not. And most strokes could have been avoided with appropriate medical care. (Doug Mills/The New York Times)
