(NYT16) NEW YORK -- July 20, 2007 -- NY-EXPLOSION-1 -- Bags containing debris litter the scene of Wednesday's steam pipe explosion, Friday, July 20, 2007, in New York. In order to contain any asbestos which might have been mixed in with the debris, workers bagged the material before removing it. New Yorkers are still questioning their air's safety after a steam pipe eruption spewed dirt and debris into the sky over midtown. Many remember the cover-up after the last major pipe rupture and the illnesses faced by workers at the site of the destroyed World Trade Center years after officials assured them lower Manhattan was safe.
