(NYT72) NEW YORK -- July 30, 2007 -- CLAIBORNE-STRATEGY-3 -- William L. McComb, chief executive of Liz Claiborne, at the company's headquarters in Manhattan on Wednesday, June 25, 2007. For decades, apparel conglomerates like Liz Claiborne, Jones Apparel Group and Kellwood have grudgingly tolerated life under the thumb of department stores. And they have paid a steep price for that obedience, laying off employees, selling brands and losing profits. But since arriving at Liz Claiborne eight months ago, McComb has outlined a radical plan for weaning the company off its reliance on department stores like Macy's by building hundreds, if not eventually thousands, of its own retail stores.
