(NYT71) NEW YORK -- July 30, 2007 -- CLAIBORNE-STRATEGY-2 -- Shoppers inside a Lucky Brand Jeans store in Lower Manhattan on Friday, July 27, 2007. For decades, apparel conglomerates like Liz Claiborne, Jones Apparel Group and Kellwood have grudgingly tolerated life under the thumb of department stores. And they have paid a steep price for that obedience, laying off employees, selling brands and losing profits. But since arriving at Liz Claiborne eight months ago, the new chief executive William L. McComb has outlined a radical plan for weaning the company off its reliance on department stores like Macy's by building hundreds, if not eventually thousands, of its own retail stores.
