(NYT38) HAVANA, Cuba -- July 29, 2007 -- CUBA-OBESE-DANCERS-2 -- Dancers from the Danza Voluminosa troupe during a performance in Havana, Cuba on Saturday, July 28, 2007. Some of the troupe's pieces are funny, while others have serious themes like gluttony, prejudice faced by fat people and obesity's psychic toll. A troupe of obese dancers have become a cultural phenomenon in Cuba, breaking the traditional stereotypes of dance, redefining the aesthetics of beauty and, along the way, raising the self esteem of people with weight problems. The troupe's popularity comes as a surprise in a country known for its muscular, lean dancers in every genre from classical ballet to salsa. (Jose Goitia/The New York Times)
