(NYT) WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Jan. 9, 2008 -- CALIF-LUXURY-CONDO -- Architect Lorcan O'Herlihy in front of his Habitat 825 condominium complex in West Hollywood, Calif., in January 2008. O'Herlihy reimagined condominiums as a complex of unique homes. Habitat 825 is intended to combine low-maintenance condo living with the high-concept creativity usually found only in architect-designed houses. Although it was initially opposed by many preservationists and neighbors -- most notably the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, a nonprofit group based next door in the Schindler House, a Modern work on the National Register of Historic Places -- it is now widely seen as a compelling addition to the city's landscape.
