(NYT33) COALINGA, Calif. -- Dec. 29, 2007 -- VALLEY-FEVER -- Gilbert Galaviz, an inmate at Pleasant Valley State Prison in Coalinga, Calif., Dec. 2007. Galaviz contracted valley fever shortly after beginning his sentence at Pleasant Valley State Prison. In the past three years, more than 900 inmates at the prison have contracted the fever, a fungal infection that has been both widespread and lethal. Endemic to parts of the Southwest, valley fever has been reported in recent years in a widening belt from South Texas to Northern California. (Heidi Schumann/The New York Times)
