(NYT23) KAUAI, Hawaii -- Dec. 28, 2007 -- ISLAND-EXPENSES-ADV30 -- Sheila and Dick Holtzman outside their home in Kauai, Hawaii in December 2007. The Holtzmans moved from Arizona to the island of Kauai in Hawaii. "I've taken an initial hit financially," he said, "and my wife went into sticker shock the first year at the price of milk." Island chambers of commerce and commissions estimate that the costs of products on islands can run from 25 percent to as much as 60 percent higher than those in nearby mainland cities, mostly because of added shipping expenses.
