(NYT58) ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Dec. 26, 2007 -- CAR-DAKAR-RALLY -- Robby Gordon, right, the Nascar driver, has been tutoring Ronn H. Bailey for this year's Dakar Rally at Gordon's garage in Anaheim, Calif., in December 2007. With 49 deaths in 29 years, the annual Dakar Rally off-road race has been panned by the Vatican newspaper as "the bloody race of irresponsibility." But each year, Bailey is drawn to it nonetheless. Bailey, the founder and chairman of a software security firm based in Las Vegas that protects sensitive corporate and government computer systems, willingly puts himself at risk to compete in the race.
