(NYT39) NEW YORK -- Dec. 26, 2007 -- NY-BRONX-MANSION -- Sherrie and Marcel Deans, left, with their son, Jackson, at their new home in the Bronx in November 2007. The Deans stumbled upon a 16-room mansion in the Bronx in 2006. Touring East Tremont, they came upon an address on their friend's list on Anthony Avenue and gazed, awe-struck, at a splendid, slightly forbidding stone mansion planted formidably in an otherwise ordinary residential neighborhood dense with mid-rise apartment buildings and two-family houses. They were told it was under contract to be sold, but that did not stop them from fantasizing. "We called it the scary house on the hill," said Sherrie Deans, 31, director of global operations for AIG consumer finance. (Christian Hansen/The New York Times)
